There's no doubt that throughout his 12 years in the NFL, safety Tyrann Mathieu had a strong impact, which is evident by earning three Pro Bowl selections and being named First-Team All-Pro three times as well.
However, on Tuesday, despite being under contract with the New Orleans Saints on a one-year, $4 million deal, he decided to call it a career, confirming the decision via an Instagram post.
Though, during a Thursday appearance on "The Up & Adams Show," the safety was asked just how retired he truly was and what he'd do if Kansas City Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo called him in January.
“I had that conversation with somebody close to me, right?" Mathieu said. "I don’t think they really believed me, right, because a couple of days ago we were just talking about you know, how MJ kind of took a couple of years off and Deion [Sanders] did it, so you know, I think that’s always like, you know, a possibility. You know I don’t want to rule anything out, but I think as of right now, where my spirit is, mentally, where I'm at, yeah, I think I’m for sure retired.”

Of course, it's not as though Mathieu's production had completely dropped off in 2024, as he still accumulated 62 tackles, three interceptions, seven pass deflections and two forced fumbles, which shows he was still a productive player.
When it comes to being specifically asked about a possible return to the Chiefs, he obviously has experience with the team, spending three seasons in Kansas City (2019 to 2021), where he was integral to their Super Bowl LIV win over the San Francisco 49ers.
He still has good relationships with several Chiefs stars, as well, including quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who congratulated Mathieu on his retirement, saying, "Congrats to my Man! @Mathieu_Era one of the best to ever do it!" via X.
However, even if he never makes an NFL comeback, Mathieu will leave behind an already impressive career with 838 tackles, 45 tackles for loss, 36 interceptions, 100 pass deflections, 27 quarterback hits and 22 pressures.
