Chip Kelly has a new job coming off his unsuccessful stint with the Las Vegas Raiders.

Kelly has taken the offensive coordinator job at Northwestern, the school announced Tuesday. It marks Kelly’s return to the Big Ten one year after leaving Ohio State for the NFL.

Kelly’s stock has certainly fallen a bit following his stint with the Raiders. Northwestern just wrapped up a 7-6 season, and certainly would not be regarded as being among the most prominent programs in the Big Ten. It remains to be seen how much he will be making with the Huskies, as he was very well compensated at both Ohio State and in the NFL.

Once seen as one of the most innovative offensive coaches in football, Kelly has never been able to replicate the success he had at Oregon. He went 35-34 at UCLA before leaving that job to become the Buckeyes’ offensive coordinator. He did help Ohio State win a national title in 2024 as part of their staff.

Kelly’s biggest failures have come in the NFL, and his latest gig was no exception. One figures he will probably stick to college jobs from here on out.
