On Sunday, the Las Vegas Raiders shocked the football world when they hired former Ohio State offensive coordinator Chip Kelly to be their offensive coordinator.
In order to bring the national championship-winning coach to Las Vegas, the Raiders had to shell out the big bucks to bring him over. With $6 million per year, Kelly is the highest-paid coordinator in the NFL.
On Wednesday, Kelly held a virtual press conference for the first time in his new position, fielding questions on what should be expected going forward.
“The history and tradition of this program speaks for itself,” said Kelly on what enticed him to join the Raiders. “One of the iconic franchises and I’m really fortunate to be here.”
Kelly talked about his history with head coach Pete Carroll and minority owner Tom Brady, as well as reflecting on his experience in his coaching career.
With his experience running a high-powered offense at Ohio State, reporters were eager to hear about how Kelly intends to run the Raiders offense and what similarities will carry over to the pros.
“I think it depends on personnel because you can’t build a quarterback,” said Kelly on the topic.
“You have to look at what is available to you, what is their strengths, how do we design the offense around their strengths, and then fitting them into the system. I think you have to be able to adapt to what you have and letting them go make plays.”
The Raiders already have All-Pro tight end Brock Bowers and 1,000-yard wide receiver Jakobi Meyers on the roster, but Carroll and general manager John Spytek will have to supply Kelly with more talent.
On the last question of the presser, Kelly was asked about the coaching philosophy he brings to his new team.
“My coaching philosophy is very simple-now three words: Just win, baby,” Kelly said, echoing the famous rallying cry of former owner Al Davis.
With Kelly on board, hopefully that philosophy reflects in actions as it does with words.
