The union between Chip Kelly and the Las Vegas Raiders is already over.
On Sunday, hours after the Raiders fell to 2-9 in Sunday’s loss to the Cleveland Browns, the team has made the decision to fire their offensive coordinator before the end of his first season.
The decision ends what was ultimately a disastrous tenure for Kelly in Las Vegas, as the Raiders made him the highest-paid coordinator in the NFL at $6 million per season back in February.
Now, just 12 weeks into his first season, the Raiders have already seen enough.
The offense has been one of the most disappointing units in all of football this season. Quarterback Geno Smith and running back Ashton Jeanty were supposed to join Brock Bowers and create a new juggernaut, at least in theory. That has been far from the case, with new additions struggling to get acclimated and the Raiders squarely in the bottom five of most offensive metrics.
The decision to move on from Kelly comes off the heels of the recent firing of special teams coordinator Tom McMahon, making two of head coach Pete Carroll’s three coordinators gone before the end of the season.
All signs are now confirming what was expected: yet another massive shakeup is on the way to the coaching staff. It is certainly a disappointing development, as the Raiders were hoping to establish continuity and build a foundation for long-term success. However, with the offense looking nightmarish at points, the braintrust had no choice but to bite the bullet.
No one is safe from the Raiders’ struggles this season, and Kelly’s firing is definitely the most telling sign yet.
