There was one play that had everybody talking in the Kansas City Chiefs' win over the Houston Texans on Saturday.
And of course, it involved Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce.
The Chiefs quarterback managed to get a throw off while falling to the ground, and it floated perfectly into the hands of Kelce in the end zone.
“I had to – I knew I was going to have to buy a little time. We were at third-and-long in the red zone, but we had talked about that exact play. We just had – Trav (Travis Kelce) had to get over that linebacker, so I had to get – I had to buy a little bit of time, so I stepped up in the pocket (and I) was able to get enough on it to get in the end zone," Mahomes said after the game. "I mean, that was a big play in the game, and we kind of needed to get in the end zone after that long drive that they (the Texans) had.”
So how did he manage that even though he was falling down?
“It’s just everything I got. It was the Bobby Stroupe workouts (laughter). It was a – you just – you find a way in those big moments and that was a big moment," he explained. "I was glad that Trav (Travis Kelce) was in that spot where I was able to get him the football.”
Mahomes knew that he was taking a chance by throwing it, but it was worth it.
“There was a little bit of, ‘I didn’t know if that dude (Texans LB Azeez Al-Shaair) was going to get back in there.’ It was kind of one that was (either) a touchdown or a pick," he stated. "I was able to get it in to get through and get to the end zone, but it’s something that we worked on. I mean, that’s end of the day. We worked on that play and that situation – third-and-long and we were able to do that.”
And as always, he impressed the coaching staff and his teammates.
“We did it again. Pat (Patrick Mahomes) and Trav (Travis Kelce) did it again, man," Chris Jones told reporters. "Just when you think you have them, you don’t. Yeah, we need more plays like that. We’ll take them.”
Head coach Andy Reid completely agreed.
“That touchdown was unbelievable – the (first) touchdown throw to Trav (Travis Kelce)," he said. "That was incredible for him (Patrick Mahomes) to be able to get himself in position – just his body in position to make that throw I thought was great."
But, there were some who questioned if Mahomes' knee was down before he threw the ball. Reid wasn't having any of that.
“No, I had a good view of it,” he responded with a laugh.
