Christian McCaffrey: Brock Purdy's not afraid to throw the deep ball

The San Francisco 49ers are off to a hot 3-0 start to the season after beating the New York Giants 30-12 on Thursday night. San Francisco has an immensely talented roster on both sides of the ball and a second-year quarterback in Brock Purdy who picked up right where he left off last season. Purdy now has a career 8-0 record in the regular season.

Purdy's been effective to this point in his career getting rid of the ball quickly and letting playmakers such as running back Christian McCaffrey, receiver Deebo Samuel and tight end George Kittle pick up yards after the catch. For example, 215 of the 310 total passing yards for the Niners came after the catch. However, Purdy's game is evolving, and he's becoming more willing to push the ball down the field.

Purdy connected with Samuel for a 27-yard touchdown against New York. Per NFL Next Gen Stats, the air distance on that touchdown of 44.6 yards was the longest completion of Purdy's career. It was a throw with a completion probability of just 27.4 percent.

Purdy's confidence deep is something that McCaffrey has noticed and is not taking for granted.

"We're lucky he's our quarterback, that's for sure," McCaffrey said.  "He makes a lot of big plays. He's not afraid to throw the ball deep. You saw the one to Deebo. That was awesome. We gotta go out there and keep making plays for him."

Samuel said that the deep ball is something the 49ers have been working on during training camp, and now that work is paying off.

"It's good to see us taking shots down the field," Samuel said.

In all, Purdy was 25-of-37 with two passing touchdowns, an excellent 111.3 passer rating and a career regular-season high of 310 passing yards. Purdy did much of his damage facing a stiff blitz orchestrated by Giants defensive coordinator Wink Martindale, going 20-of-31 for 247 yards with both of his passing scores coming against the blitz.

Purdy's progressing and becoming multifaceted as a quarterback. While he gets rid of the ball quick and did so at a career-high rate of 2.34 seconds versus the Giants, the Niners will be all the more dangerous offensively now that he is starting to throw deep. In year No. 2, the sky is the limit for Purdy and the 49ers offense.
