Will the San Francisco 49ers consider trading away Christian McCaffrey since they're clearly "retooling" their roster? That seems to be a popular question this Wednesday.
Before players could even agree to new deals for the 2025 season, the 49ers traded Deebo Samuel to the Washington Commanders. The franchise then said farewell to Aaron Banks, Dre Greenlaw, Talanoa Hufanga, Charvarius Ward and a few other free agents.
Although a trade involving McCaffrey isn't imminent, ESPN analyst Ryan Clark believes the 49ers should entertain offers for the former Offensive Player of the Year.
"I would absolutely trade Christian McCaffrey and I would try to get as much as I could possibly get for him," Clark said. "When you look at what Kyle Shanahan has been able to do, it's run football. I know we thought last year they missed some of the versatility of Christian Mccaffrey, but when you cut Kyle Juszczyk, you let some of that versatility go."
This take from Clark generated a lot of attention on social media. Despite how beloved McCaffrey is in the Bay Area, some fans would be OK with the front office trading him.
"Sadly, he's not wrong," a 49ers fan said in response to Clark's take.
"Makes good sense. He is injury prone and for those of us who are fanboys, let’s rebuild," another 49ers fan replied. "This team will not win a Super Bowl soon, I stand on that."
McCaffrey is under contract with the 49ers through the 2027 season. His cap hit for this year is $9.4 million.
Trading away McCaffrey before June 1 wouldn't give the 49ers any cap relief. If anything, it'd just make their offense more limited.
McCaffrey had over 2,000 scrimmage yards and 21 touchdowns for the 49ers during the 2023 season. Unfortunately, injuries prevented him from doing much damage this past fall. He appeared in just four games, rushing for 202 yards.
Regardless if he's on the 49ers or not, NFL fans would love to see McCaffrey have a bounce-back season.
