Green Bay Packers wide receiver Christian Watson would have been in a contract year in the 2025 NFL season, but he’ll continue to be with the team beyond the current campaign, thanks to a one-year contract extension worth $11 million.
Watson, who is still on the PUP list after suffering a major right knee injury in the Packers’ final game of the 2024 NFL regular season, could have waited for the offseason to find a new contract. But he apparently did not want to concern himself with that, instead choosing to sign the extension deal to stay at least one more season with the Packers.
Although Watson is confident in his abilities, he is aware that injuries are always a threat. He is expected to return to action at some point this season, but if he gets injured again without a new contract, that would create an even more stressful outlook for the wide receiver.
Via Rob Demovsky of ESPN:
“I think that I know what I’m worth as a player when comparing it to the market and whatnot,” Watson said. “But it’s a risk and reward when it comes down to it with the injuries that I’ve had in the past and obviously coming back from a major injury like this. So just weighing the risk and weighing the reward of going both ways with it.”
Watson still has two more weeks remaining in his stint on the physically unable to perform list. He can practice with the team as soon as Week 6, but so far, it appears that Green Bay is doing just fine without the talented wide receiver on the field.
That being said, the Packers’ wide receiver room took another injury blow when Jayden Reed hurt his shoulder in Week 2’s win against the Washington Commanders.
Watson has 1,653 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns on 98 receptions through 38 games with Green Bay.
