The Cincinnati Bengals scraped out a much-needed victory in the final moments on Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars to improve to 2-0 on the season.
However, the win came at a cost, as star quarterback Joe Burrow—who left the game in the second quarter in clear pain—was officially diagnosed Monday with a Grade 3 turf toe injury. The setback is expected to require surgery and sideline him for a minimum of three months.
Despite the blow, Bengals wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase, who carried the offense at times on Sunday, made it clear the team has to adopt a “next man up” mentality. That responsibility now falls on backup quarterback Jake Browning, who accounted for three second-half touchdowns, including the go-ahead score with 18 seconds left in the game.

“It’s a rollercoaster,” Chase said, via the team’s website. “Every game is going to be a rollercoaster. Every week from here on out, we’ve got to focus and execute. That’s the only thing. Our quarterback got [knocked] down, we’ve got to [say] ‘Next man up,’ and it’s on from there.”
Shortly after the news of Burrow’s injury timeline broke on Monday, the Bengals announced at least some positive news on Chase following his monster performance of 14 catches for 165 yards and a touchdown.
Cincinnati revealed that Chase not only hauled in his 400th career reception during the game but was also nominated for the FedEx Air & Ground Player of the Week, an honor he has claimed multiple times throughout his career.
“400 and counting....” the Bengals posted.

Moving forward, Ja’Marr Chase is going to be more pivotal than ever since entering the league.
Without Joe Burrow, his production will need to be extremely high week in and week out if Cincinnati hopes to stay afloat over the next three months until Burrow can potentially return in mid-December—a timeline that would give him only the final three or four weeks of the regular season, if that.
One positive for the Bengals is that Jake Browning has been with the organization since 2021. He knows the offense inside and out, has played meaningful snaps with the talent around him, and has already proven he can win games at the NFL level.
In fact, Browning started multiple games in 2023 after Burrow’s season-ending hand injury, going 4-3 in that stretch while completing just over 70% of his passes.
