Cincinnati Bengals Offensive Rookie Appears Poised for Breakout Season in 2024
Phil Didion/The Enquirer / USA TODAY NETWORK

As a whole, the Cincinnati Bengals managed to improve their roster over this offseason by addressing weaknesses they had on the line of scrimmage.  While it is rare, the franchise was in desperate need of help as they went out and acquired offensive tackle Trent Brown on the offensive side and Sheldon Rankins on the defensive side.  While both of those players have the ability to make an impact on this organization, it was clear that this team was in desperate need for more.

Cincinnati Bengals Rookie Poised For Big 2024 Season

While they had some major free agent acquisitions during the recent transfer window, arguably the most substantial addition to this team has been the first-round selection of University of Georgia offensive tackle Amarius Mims.  Mims was an absolute juggernaut on the right side during his time with the Bulldogs and he fully acknowledges that it is going to be a slug to start on the offensive line with both Trent and Orlando Brown on the roster with major experience.

“I’m going to do everything in my power, but I’m just looking forward right now to learning from Orlando and Trent, two of the best guys in the league,” Mims said.

That is exactly the right attitude that any fan should want out of a promising rookie.  While he is working hard to come in and earn the starting job, he fully accepts that he can learn a lot from the talent and experience that is already on this roster.  The real moral of the story there is that Mims is going to work as hard as he can win or lose and that is the team mentality that any coach dreams of in a player.

It will be interesting to see whether Mims really has an opportunity to win the starting job during training camp this upcoming preseason but another huge green flag for this organization is that their first round rookie puts in major effort off of the field as well as on it.  Mims recently expressed exactly what he is doing to prepare for his first season in the city of Cincinnati.

“I’ve been in the playbook. Just playbook, honestly,” Mims said. “I got drafted Thursday, Friday I came, iPad ready, me and Coach in the film room watching film.”

It is a huge win for offensive line coach Frank Pollack to get an offensive tackle in who is willing to do the work in the class room as well as in the weight room.  It’s also huge for the player because it can be a challenge for incoming rookies to step in and learn a professional-grade playbook.  Mims appears to be taking it in stride and rolling with whatever challenge is tossed at him.  That is exactly what the city of Cincinnati wants in an offensive tackle.
