Cincinnati Bengals running back Trayveon Williams expected to miss time with mild ankle sprain
Mark Konezny-USA TODAY Sports

Bengals running back Trayveon Williams suffered a sprained ankle during Tuesday’s practice. It’s unclear how much time he’ll miss with the injury.

Williams, the former Texas A&M standout, provided his own injury update Tuesday night. He tweeted: “I’m all good everybody take a deep breath.” And he used the praying hands emoji.

Williams was quote-tweeting a post written by NFL Network reporter Ian Rapoport. According to Rapoport’s tweet, the tailback injured his ankle during a ball-security drill. Doctors consider the sprain of his right ankle to be a mild one.

Bengals coach Zac Taylor told reporters after practice that the team still was determining the extent of Williams’ injury.

The Bengals selected Williams in the sixth round of the 2019 NFL Draft. He left A&M early after an All-SEC season in which he rushed for 1,760 yards and gained 2,038 all-purpose yards.

The Bengals have used Trayveon Williams as a backup running back behind starter Joe Mixon. Cincinnati lost Samaje Perine to free agency in the off-season. Perine signed with the Broncos. So there is an opening for more playing time. Williams appeared in eight games in 2022.

“He’s always been a guy that’s created energy,” Taylor told reporters. “I think he’s really learned how to become a pro in all aspects, whether it’s special teams or things that we need him to do on offense.”

Aside from Mixon and Trayveon Williams, the Bengals also still have Chris Evans on the roster from last year’s team. In addition, Cincinnati selected Chase Brown in the fifth round back in April’s draft.

Of course, the most major injury news out of Cincinnati concerns the calf of quarterback Joe Burrow. He strained a calf muscle last week in training camp. Burrow is wearing a black sleeve to help protect his calf. He’s probably going to miss a chunk of training camp. But indications are that he’ll be ready for the Bengals season opener on the road against the rival Cleveland Browns.
