Just when you thought the Bengals were starting to hit their stride, the injury bug bites, and it bites hard. Cincinnati’s defensive end, Trey Hendrickson, is back on the sidelines after aggravating a nagging hip injury during Sunday’s game against the Jets. The team officially ruled him out, and a collective groan could be heard from every Bengals fan watching. It’s the kind of news that makes you want to throw your remote, but please, for the sake of your TV, don’t.
Hendrickson was already a question mark heading into the game. He had been limited in practice throughout the week and sat out entirely on Friday. He tried to give it a go on Sunday, but it was clear from the get-go that he wasn’t himself. He was in and out of the game during the first half, looking more like a guy trying to find a comfortable spot on a lumpy couch than the quarterback-hunting menace we’re used to seeing.
The final straw came late in the first half. Hendrickson limped off the field, and as he moved gingerly toward the locker room, you just knew his day was done. He managed a single tackle before his exit, a stat that tells you everything you need to know about how hampered he was.

Losing Hendrickson is a massive blow to this Bengals defense. Let’s be honest, their pass rush is already shaky, and without its star player, it’s about as intimidating as a declawed kitten. They barely breathed on Jets Quarterback Justin Fields in the first half, and now they have to figure out how to generate pressure without the guy who commands double-teams and makes offensive linemen have nightmares.
The Bengals are leading 24-16 at the time of publication. But holding on without your best defensive weapon is a tall order in the NFL. It puts a mountain of pressure on the rest of the defensive line to step up and fill some gigantic shoes.
So, what’s next? All eyes will be on the practice reports this week. The big question is whether Hendrickson can recover in time for next week’s matchup against the Bears. Hip injuries are tricky beasts; they can linger and sap a player’s explosiveness, which is Hendrickson’s entire game. The Bengals will undoubtedly be cautious. Rushing him back could risk a longer-term issue, and that’s a disaster they can’t afford. For now, Bengals fans will have to hold their breath and hope for the best, because a defense without Hendrickson is a scary thought indeed.
