The NFL has spoken, and Ja’Marr Chase is getting an unwanted day off. The Bengals’ star wide receiver had his one-game suspension for spitting on Steelers cornerback Jalen Ramsey upheld, meaning he’ll be watching Sunday’s game against the Patriots from the couch, just like the rest of us.
The only difference? His unscheduled break comes with a hefty price tag of over half a million dollars. Ouch.
Hearing officer Jordy Nelson, jointly appointed by the NFL and NFLPA, has upheld the one-game suspension of Cincinnati’s Ja’Marr Chase.

Let’s break down the financial fallout because it’s a doozy. For losing his cool and, well, his saliva, Chase is forfeiting a game check worth a staggering $507,156. That’s his weekly paycheck of $448,333 plus a $58,823 per-game active bonus, all gone. To put that into perspective, the average American makes about $61,000 a year. Chase just lost eight times that for a single moment of madness.
The incident itself was a messy affair during the Bengals’ loss to the Steelers. After some on-field pushing and shoving, Ramsey was ejected for throwing a punch. He later claimed Chase had spit on him, an allegation Chase flatly denied. “I never opened my mouth to that guy,” he said. Unfortunately for him, the video footage told a different story, and the NFL sided with the tape.
This suspension couldn’t come at a worse time for Cincinnati. The team is sputtering along with a dismal 3-7 record, and the frustration is clearly boiling over. Chase himself was seen fuming after a loss just a couple of weeks ago. Losing their top offensive weapon against a red-hot, 9-2 Patriots team feels like trying to put out a fire with gasoline.
The appeal, heard by former NFL receiver Jordy Nelson, was always a long shot. Arguing against clear video evidence is tougher than trying to tackle Derrick Henry in the open field. Now, the Bengals are left to pick up the pieces and figure out how to generate offense without their explosive playmaker.
Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin, when asked what he told Ramsey after the incident, gave a typically blunt response: “I have no message if someone spits in your face. Do what comes natural.” It seems the NFL, while not condoning Ramsey’s punch, agreed that Chase’s action was the one that truly crossed the line.
So, as Chase sits out and contemplates the costliest spit in recent memory, the Bengals have to find a way to compete. For a season that’s already been a trainwreck, they’ve just lost one of their main engines.
