The Texans finally got a bit of encouraging news in what has been one of the more unpredictable stretches of their 2025 season. Houston sits at 5-5 heading into a tough Thursday Night Football matchup with the 7-3 Buffalo Bills, and the biggest question all week has revolved around CJ Stroud’s availability.
Stroud has missed time while in concussion protocol, and the Texans' offense has clearly felt the loss. Before the Bills' game, a new update came out that gave fans at least some reason to breathe easier.
According to reporting from DJ Bien-Aime, Stroud is expected to return to practice, a key step forward even if it does not guarantee he will be cleared to play on Thursday night. For a Texans team trying to stay alive in the AFC race, every piece of news matters, especially when it involves the franchise quarterback.
Some good news for the Texans, CJ Stroud is likely to be back at practice today per sources.

Doesn’t mean he ll clear the concussion protocol by Thursday against the Bills but a good sign that at the very least he’ll be back against the Colts next Week.
Stroud returning to the field, even in a limited fashion, is an important sign for Houston’s staff. Players cannot move through the final stages of concussion protocol without first practicing. While that does not promise clearance before Thursday, it does indicate that his symptoms have improved. The Texans have been cautious with him, and this update reflects that his recovery is progressing.
So far this season, Stroud has thrown for 1705 yards and 11 touchdowns with five interceptions. Houston ranks 21st in scoring at 22 points per game, a number heavily affected by the quarterback instability over the last stretch. The offense has struggled to create explosive plays without Stroud’s timing, accuracy and ability to extend drives. Getting him back on the field is a significant step toward regaining rhythm in an AFC crowded with playoff hopefuls.
Davis Mills has been under center for Houston in his absence. He has made two starts and played in four games. Mills has completed 60% of his passes for 726 yards, with three touchdowns and an interception.
Buffalo comes in at 7-3 and is coming off a big-time win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Bills' offense scored 44 last week. The defense for the Bills has been less than stellar, but Houston would still like to have their starting quarterback for this big Week 12 game.
The schedule ramps up immediately after the Bills' matchup. Houston travels to the Indianapolis Colts on November 30 in a divisional game that will loom large in the playoff standings.
The following week includes a December 7 trip to Kansas City to take on the defending Super Bowl Champs. The Texans will need Stroud at full speed for that stretch, and getting him back on the field this week increases the likelihood he will be available for both of those games.
The Texans knew the second half of the season would be demanding. The Texans are chasing Indianapolis and Jacksonville. The Colts are 8-2, while the Jaguars come in with a 6-4 record.
If Stroud is cleared for Buffalo, the Texans get an immediate boost. If not, the positive step in his recovery still sets him up well for the critical weeks that follow. With a playoff race coming down the stretch, the Texans needed a sign that their quarterback was getting closer. They finally received one, not they need to see him under center in the near future.
