CJ Stroud is Under Too Much Pressure in 2026

CJ Stroud enters the 2026 season facing more scrutiny than at any point in his career, and it's easy to understand why after the year he just had. Following a historic rookie campaign that won him Offensive Rookie of the Year, Stroud has now posted back-to-back disappointing seasons, and 2025 hit a new low point that culminated in one of the worst playoff performances of his career.

Stroud's 2025 regular season numbers, tell the story of a quarterback trending in the wrong direction. He completed 64.5 percent of his passes for 3,041 yards, 19 touchdowns and 8 interceptions across 14 games, a clear step back from his rookie-year totals of over 4,100 yards and 23 touchdowns to just five picks. Against the New England Patriots in the divisional round, Stroud threw a career-high four interceptions, all of them coming in the first half, finishing the day 20 of 47 for 212 yards, one touchdown and a passer rating of just 28. Combined with his performance the week before against Pittsburgh, Stroud finished the postseason with seven total turnovers across two games, the most by any player in a single postseason since Carson Palmer in 2015.

Watching Stroud last season, he often looked jumpy and frantic in the pocket, bailing early on plays and making rushed decisions under pressure rather than trusting his protection or letting routes develop. Houston moved on from Tytus Howard, trading him to Cleveland, and replaced that production with veteran guard Wyatt Teller, who brings over 100 career starts and a strong track record as a run blocker after his years with the Browns. The Texans also added rookie Keylan Rutledge to the interior and signed veteran right tackle Braden Smith, who has started well over 100 games in his career but has also dealt with durability concerns in recent seasons. On paper, this line is better than the group that struggled last season, but it's still an unproven combination that hasn't played a single snap together, and it remains fair to question whether it's actually good yet rather than just improved.

Put it all together and the pressure on Stroud in 2026 is enormous. He's not just trying to bounce back from a down year statistically, he's trying to shake a growing reputation for turning the ball over under pressure at the worst possible moments, all while relying on a retooled but still unproven offensive line and a defense that may not be able to bail him out every single week. This is as close to a make-or-break season as Stroud has faced in his career.
