Russell Wilson’s tenure as the New York Giants’ starting quarterback appears uncertain as rookie Jaxson Dart’s rapid development draws attention. With the team focused on rebuilding, Wilson’s role could shift quickly if his performance falters during the 2025 season.

Wilson, brought in on a one-year deal, brings leadership and experience to a young Giants roster. However, his struggles in recent seasons, including a disappointing stint with the Steelers, have raised doubts about his ability to guide the team long-term. While his presence provides stability, the franchise is clearly prioritizing Dart’s growth as a future cornerstone.

Dart, the 25th overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, has impressed during training camp with his poise and playmaking ability. His chemistry with the Giants’ young core, including standout receiver Malik Nabers, has fueled speculation that the rookie could take over sooner rather than later. Coaches and fans alike are eager to see how quickly he can adapt to the NFL.

Wilson’s margin for error is slim, as the Giants are eager to move past one of the worst seasons in franchise history. The team’s desperation for a fresh start, coupled with Dart’s potential, puts significant pressure on the veteran quarterback to deliver immediate results. A slow start could hasten the transition to the rookie.

NFL Analysis Explains Why Russell Wilson’s Starting QB Role With New York Giants is in Danger

Wilson’s role as New York’s starting QB may not be permanent. This is detailed in an analysis by Alex Kay for Bleacher Report.

During his lone campaign with the Pittsburgh Steelers, the 36-year-old didn’t get on the field until Week 7 due to an injury and finished with a middling stat line (63.7 percent completion rate, 2,482 passing yards, 16 passing touchdowns) that has tempered expectations for his impending debut in the Big Apple.

Dart’s rapid development could see him emerge as the starter fairly quickly. According to Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post, the Ole Miss product just had his best day of training camp and dazzled onlookers. After that sizzling practice session, the young quarterback said “the game’s starting to slow down” for him, a concerning development for Wilson.

If the No. 25 overall pick continues to impress throughout the preseason, it’s likely Wilson will only be keeping his job for a couple months at best. Barring a red-hot start for the Giants under the veteran quarterback, this should be Dart’s team by the midpoint of the campaign.

Head coach Brian Daboll has emphasized competition in the quarterback room, signaling that Dart will have opportunities to challenge for the starting role. Wilson must prove he can still perform at a high level or risk being relegated to a mentorship role as Dart takes the reins.

As the season unfolds, all eyes will be on the Giants’ quarterback situation. Wilson’s experience offers value, but Dart’s emergence represents the future, and the franchise seems ready to embrace the next chapter.
