Cleveland Browns are set to have a position battle at training camp involving their one time labeled draft steal
Jeff Lange-USA TODAY NETWORK

The Cleveland Browns have numerous issues that must be addressed if they want to improve on their 3–14 record from a year ago.

Cleveland will welcome in veterans to start training camp on Tuesday, officially beginning the ramp-up to the 2025 season.

Several position battles are set to unfold in camp, but one of the most important will be at left tackle. Dawand Jones is likely the frontrunner for the job, but he can’t simply be handed the role after back-to-back injury-riddled seasons.

The Browns brought in veteran offensive tackle Cornelius Lucas to upgrade their depth. Lucas is a capable lineman who can start at either tackle spot, and he’s expected to push Jones for the starting job. Jack Conklin remains the projected right tackle—assuming he’s healthy and continues to play at an above-average level.

Jones started nine of his first 11 career games as a rookie, facing elite competition such as T.J. Watt and Nick Bosa—and holding his own. However, leg and knee injuries have been a concern for the former Ohio State standout, who was taken in the fourth round of the 2023 NFL Draft. If the 6-foot-8, 374-pound lineman can manage his weight, it could make a huge difference for him in 2025.

Jones has the talent and has flashed it, but the Browns aren’t in a position to simply hand him the starting job. Lucas, meanwhile, allowed just one sack over 464 offensive snaps last season with the Washington Commanders and earned a solid 74.1 grade from Pro Football Focus.

Given the offensive struggles Cleveland faced last year, the offensive line must take a step forward—especially with what’s expected to be unpredictable quarterback play. The Browns are poised to play two rookies at some point this season, likely between Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders.

Keep an eye on the left tackle spot as the Browns open training camp, with their first preseason game just around the corner on Aug. 8.
