Cleveland Browns Get Alarming Injury News on Star Defender

Carson Schwesinger’s status has become one of the Cleveland Browns’ most pressing concerns after Sunday’s 17-12 loss to the New York Jets.

The linebacker, who earned Defensive Rookie of the Year honors in 2025, finished the game in a walking boot and has since been diagnosed with a Grade 1 ankle sprain, according to NFL media’s Ian Rapoport.

The injury occurred earlier in the contest, yet Schwesinger remained on the field and delivered a strip sack of Geno Smith in the fourth quarter that briefly gave Cleveland life.

That sequence underscored both his toughness and the risk the Browns now face.

Schwesinger has repeatedly spoken about his willingness to play through discomfort, once saying he would fight until he could no longer walk and would have to be carried off the field.

Against the Jets, he came close to testing that claim. He finished with eight tackles, a sack, a forced fumble, and a pass breakup, performances that kept the Browns within striking distance despite a series of other setbacks.

Rookie wide receiver KC Concepcion exited early with a concussion, right tackle Tytus Howard tried to play through a knee issue before leaving, and running back Quinshon Judkins was also seen in a walking boot after the game.

Through five weeks Schwesinger leads the Browns with 43 tackles.

He has quickly become a central piece of the defense under coordinator Mike Rutenberg, and his absence or limited availability would force significant adjustments against a Baltimore Ravens team that presents a demanding test in Week 6.

Rapoport noted that Schwesinger has not been ruled out for that matchup and that his status will depend on how the ankle responds over the coming days.

A Grade 1 sprain is the mildest classification, often manageable with treatment and protective measures, but lower-body injuries can linger and affect pursuit angles, change of direction, and tackling range.

Cleveland’s coaching staff and medical team will monitor swelling and range of motion closely. If Schwesinger can move well enough in practice to contribute without risking further damage, the Browns will likely keep him available.

If the ankle remains compromised, the team may have to lean more heavily on depth at linebacker while navigating an already thin roster on both sides of the ball.

The coming injury report and practice participation will provide the clearest signals, but the immediate aftermath of the Jets game has already introduced new uncertainty around one of the franchise’s most important young defenders.
