Later today, the Chicago Bears will begin the first of three days of rookie minicamp, featuring all the signed draft picks, undrafted free agents, and tryout invitees.

It's a great opportunity for the team to finish rounding out the 90-man roster and for the coaching staff to get their eyes on some of the new additions looking to join the team. It's also a great opportunity to see where the team is still lacking positionally.

There are three main positions to watch this weekend: running back, defensive end, and safety. All three positions are hurting in terms of depth, and if the young guys can't step up, some veteran free agent signings could be made in the following weeks.

As far as the running back position goes, general manager Ryan Poles noted the coaching staff is eager to see some of the young players before looking into the "short-list" of free agents still on the market.

"I know we really want to see this new coaching staff with the players we have to see if they believe that they can help us. But, again, we'll always keep our eye on the short list to see if we need to bring someone in to create competition and raise the level of talent in that room," Poles explained.

One of the top names on that suspected "short-list" is former Cleveland Browns running back Nick Chubb. Chubb is still a free agent, two years removed from a serious knee injury while still recovering from a broken foot in 2024 as well.

And after drafting two backs during the 2025 NFL Draft and re-working Jerome Ford's contract, Browns general manager Andrew Berry all but confirmed the team will be moving on from the former fan-favorite.

“I would say it is probably increasingly unlikely,” Berry said of the possibility of re-signing Chubb, via 92.3 The Fan. “We do have two young guys that we like. We think Jerome [Ford] plays a role.”

This news fully puts Chubb on the radar of other teams, and Chubb has been sharing impressive workout videos lately in hopes of building his free agent market.

For those worried about Chubb's health and durability coming off two serious injuries at his age, Berry even shared a positive update.

"I would expect him to take another step being a year removed from the knee injury," Berry added.

Chubb played eight games for the Browns in 2024 and averaged a career-low 3.3 yards per carry and 41.5 yards per game. Being able to prove he's back healthy, although returning to his true former form is unlikely, will be critical before an outside team such as the Bears consider signing him.

As far as rookie minicamp goes this week, keep a close eye on seventh-round rookie Kyle Monangai, UDFA Deion Hankins, and rookie tryout Christian Grubb, three backs looking to prove themselves in front of the new coaching staff.
