The 60-year-old replaces Kevin Stefanski, who was fired after the Browns finished with a 5-12 record this past season. Monken has been working in college football or the NFL for over 30 years, but is now set to get his first shot as an NFL head coach.
He served as the OC for the Browns and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before spending three seasons in Baltimore, where the Ravens’ offense was among the best in the league.
The opposite can be said about Cleveland, as the Browns have boasted one of the league’s toughest defenses for the last several seasons, but Monken’s biggest challenge will be the quarterback position.
He’ll be working with veteran Deshaun Watson as well as sophomores Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel. None of these players have proven themselves as elite QBs, leaving Monken with a complicated decision.
Ultimately, the Browns can now focus on building their team with a new head coach at the helm.
