The Cleveland Browns were active early Thursday, making a pair of roster moves—one of which may come as a bit of a surprise.
Two offseasons ago, the Browns were aggressive in free agency, signing a talented pass rusher to a three-year, $19 million deal.
Now, the team has announced that they are parting ways with defensive end Ogbo Okoronkwo, who was heading into the final year of his contract. In a corresponding move, the Browns signed kicker Andre Szmyt.

In two seasons with the Browns, Okoronkwo appeared in 30 games (five starts), recording 7.5 sacks during that span. In the 2024 season alone, he posted three sacks and 23 total tackles.

This offseason, the Browns added former Tampa Bay Buccaneers pass rusher Joe Tryon-Shoyinka. The new addition is expected to compete for a rotational role behind All-Pro Myles Garrett and likely starter Isaiah McGuire. Alex Wright will be back in the mix too after only playing in four games last season due to injury. When healthy in 2023, Wright made five sacks. Wright is entering a contract year in 2025.
McGuire is known for his strong run-stopping ability—an ideal complement to Garrett on the opposite side. Last season, the former SEC standout flashed some pass-rush potential, finishing with 2.5 sacks and 36 tackles while playing with the high motor that defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz values.
Still, Okoronkwo was the most proven edge rusher on the roster outside of Garrett, and the Browns will now be relying on two younger players to step up. It’s a calculated risk as Cleveland heads into a critical season for the current regime.
