Cleveland Browns’ Week 1 opponent is dealing with major problems worth monitoring as they begin training camp

Veterans report to training camp today for the Cleveland Browns, signaling that the 2025 season is right around the corner.

When the Browns kick off their 2025 campaign, they’ll do so by hosting the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 1 on Sept. 7. Once again, Cleveland opens its season with an AFC North clash.

Cincinnati is ramping up training camp as well, but the Bengals are facing issues the Browns don’t have to worry about—mainly, unresolved contract situations with key players.

Trey Hendrickson tops Bengals’ list of problems

As the Bengals begin their preparations for Week 1 against the Browns, they’re doing so without All-Pro pass rusher Trey Hendrickson. He was not present for the first day of training camp and reportedly has no intention of stepping on the field until he receives a contract extension.

Hendrickson is coming off back-to-back 17.5-sack seasons and has firmly established himself among the league’s elite pass rushers. At 30 years old and with no guaranteed money remaining after this season, it’s understandable that he’s holding out. The two sides reportedly remain far apart on both guaranteed money and contract length, suggesting this situation might drag on.

The Bengals also don’t have their first-round pick, defensive end Shemar Stewart, under contract or on the field.  Cincinnati opened camp without what could be both of its starting defensive ends.

While both Hendrickson and Stewart could be available for Week 1, the time missed in training camp could still prove to be significant. There’s plenty of time to get back on the field, but the longer the absences last, the more concern will build.

Cleveland not having to face Hendrickson in the season opener would be a major boost. The All-Pro pass rusher isn’t taking the field without a new deal—so for now, all we can do is wait to see how it plays out.
