Cleveland Head Coach Kevin Stefanski Is The Most Tenured Coach In Browns History Since This All-Time Great

The leash is short for Browns head coaches. Since the franchise returned in 1999 the team has had 12 head coaches lead the team. Yes, your math is correct, that's 12 different head coaches in just 25 years.

Eight different head coaches lasted less than two seasons and four of them only got one year at the helm. The most recent victim of the one-and-done was former head coach Freddie Kitchens, who was very obviously in over his head from day one.

It has been a revolving door of coaches in Cleveland since 1999, that was until Kevin Stefanski put a stop to all of that. Stefanski's staying power has been consistent over the years and has been with him at every stop. When he worked his way up through the ranks in Minnesota, he survived four different coaching regimes. Every single one kept him on staff in the midst of change.

Then in 2020, he took the least stable job in the history of the NFL in the hopes of turning around the cursed Cleveland franchise. What has he done since then? Things started on the right foot as he immediately took Cleveland to the playoffs in his first year and earned his first Coach of the Year honor.

Things would decline a little as back to back tough quarterback years in 2021 and 2022 led to disappointing seasons before the magic that was 2023, when he again won the NFL Coach of the Year award.

Stefanski and Andrew Berry have consistently preached one thing since they began working together and that is stability for this franchise. Those two see this team through the same lens and are consistently building it to be a stable winner.

Stefanski's extension on Wednesday marks the first time that a Browns' head coach has been extended since Hue Jackson received one after two really tough seasons in 2016 and 2017. Beyond that, when Dallas comes to town on September 8th, Stefanski will begin his fifth season as the head man for Cleveland. This is the first time that a head coach has coached in five consecutive seasons since the legend Bill Belichick did it in 1991 through 1995.

Stefanski established stability in this franchise and now it is time to take the next step. This roster is primed, this team is ready and they will follow Stefanski wherever he takes them.
