The Minnesota Vikings coaching staff continues to be viewed highly across the league as another team has requested to interview one of their assistants.
Just days after being hired by the Chicago Bears, new head coach Ben Johnson has requested to interview Vikings passing game coordinator/defensive backs coach Daronte Jones for their defensive coordinator position.
Jones is another one of the rising stars on the Vikings coaching staff. He's relatively older at 46 years old, but Jones is highly respected and was considered a candidate to replace defensive coordinator Brian Flores if he got a head coaching job in the offseason.
A graduate from Morgan State, Jones has been coaching since 2001 with the majority of his time in the world of college football. He got into professional football as the defensive backs coach for the Montreal Alouettes in 2011 and got into the National Football League as the assistant defensive backs coach for the Miami Dolphins.
Jones spent 2016 and 2017 there before becoming the cornerbacks coach for the Cincinnati Bengals in 2018 and 2019. From there, Jones joined Mike Zimmer's staff in 2020 before becoming LSU's defensive coordinator in 2021, but returned to Minnesota when head coach Kevin O'Connell took over. He started as defensive backs coach before earning the title of passing game coordinator in 2023.
Jones has been a huge factor in the development of the Vikings' defensive back room, especially with the safeties. Josh Metellus and Camryn Bynum went from being day three picks to Pro Bowl level players. Pair that with Harrison Smith, who is still the same level of player despite his level of athleticism waiting in his 13th season.
It's worth noting that the Vikings can deny the interview, especially since it's within the division, but that usually isn't the way they handle their own business.
