Colin Cowherd links 49ers' Jimmy Garoppolo with Seahawks

Last month, ESPN's Louis Riddick argued that the Seattle Seahawks should look to sign San Francisco 49ers veteran quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo assuming Garoppolo would eventually hit the open market this summer.

Garoppolo is still recovering from March shoulder surgery and has seemingly been replaced atop the San Francisco depth chart by 2021 rookie Trey Lance, and it's thought by some that Jimmy G would be an upgrade for Seattle over journeyman Geno Smith and 2019 second-round pick Drew Lock.

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported on Monday that the Seahawks have "done their homework" on potentially landing Garoppolo in one way or another even though Seattle and San Francisco are division foes. Per David Bonilla of 49ers WebZone, Fox Sports' Colin Cowherd explained on Tuesday how a Seahawks-49ers trade could benefit all involved.

"They don't want to give him away," Cowherd said of the 49ers' relationship with Garoppolo. "Because of his shoulder surgery, they're going to get a fifth-round pick. There's one exception. Seattle, in the Russell Wilson trade, has two number ones and two number twos next year. And San Francisco believes they can get a second-round pick for Garoppolo—only from Seattle.

"Everybody else will say, 'I'm not giving you a second-round pick for Jimmy Garoppolo.' But San Francisco can go to Seattle and say, 'Time out. You think I'm going to give Jimmy Garoppolo to a division rival with a chance that he's going to come back and beat us twice a year? You're going to pay the price for that.'"

Cowherd added that Seattle head coach Pete Carroll is 70 years old and, thus, likely wants to win as soon as possible, so much so that he'd maybe be willing to overpay to acquire Garoppolo's services.
