Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick is receiving an honor for his activism. Kaepernick earned an award last year from the Amazon company Audible for his contributions to an audiobook based on his life.

According to Paul Grein with Billboard.com, Kaepernick will be honored by The Gordon Parks Foundation‘s Annual Awards Dinner in May. They will celebrate Kaepernick’s work in Social Justice:

"Athlete and activist Colin Kaepernick, civil rights activist and former chairman of the NAACP Myrlie Evers-Williams and mixed-media artist Mickalene Thomas have been added to the roster of honorees at The Gordon Parks Foundation’s Annual Awards Dinner, which will take place on May 21 at Cipriani 42nd St. in New York City.

"Kaepernick, holder of the all-time NFL record for most rushing yards in a game by a quarterback, took a knee during the playing of 'The Star Spangled Banner' in 2016 to bring attention to systemic oppression against Black and brown people. Since then, he has founded and helped to fund three organizations – Know Your Rights Camp, Kaepernick Media, and Kaepernick Publishing – that seek to advance the liberation of Black and brown people."

Social justice was important to photographer Gordon Parks. Much of Park’s artwork was devoted to highlighting civil rights. Kaepernick should be excited to be incredible on a list of honorees.

Kaepernick spent the early part of the 2023 fall trying to find a spot in the NFL for this season but was unsuccessful. Kaepernick recently spoke at a Know Your Rights Camp event in Houston.
