The college football coaching carousel this past cycle had a ton of twists and surprises. Some of these include Rich Rodriguez going to West Virginia, Michael Vick and DeSean Jackson getting head coaching jobs, and Eddie George going to Bowling Green following Scot Loeffler's departure.
Another one was UNLV hiring former Florida and Mississippi State head coach Dan Mullen. UNLV gave Mullen a five-year deal worth $3.5 million per year that is meant to keep him in Las Vegas through 2029.
After being hired in December, Mullen wasted no time in working the transfer portal and hitting the recruiting trail.
However, UNLV athletic director Erick Harper revealed to the Board of Regents that the school only has the money to pay two years of Mullen's contract, per Mick Akers of The Las Vegas Review-Journal.
“We have the funds to pay the coach over the next two years,” Harper said when asked how they would pay Mullen's deal. “We have been working with our donors to assist with philanthropic dollars. We have one that has already paid their commitment, and that money is in an unrestricted line and that will be utilized in the future to help with the salaries.”
The athletic department is reportedly $26 to $31 million in debt despite committing to Mullen's $3.5 million deal per year.
Furthermore, UNLV is planning to raise ticket prices in an effort "to assist and generate new revenue," per Harper.
Still, if the program doesn't get the support Harper is expecting, it could be a very tough situation for Mullen's time in Las Vegas.
UNLV finished with an 11-3 record and a 6-1 Mountain West mark and defeated Cal, 24-13, in the LA Bowl to cap off a strong season. But, questions loom on the funding for the program, and only time will tell if the money comes in as expected.
