INDIANAPOLIS — Chris Ballard is officially done waiting. The Indianapolis Colts signed former Arizona Cardinals linebacker Akeem Davis-Gaither Wednesday, securing a defensive centerpiece to replace the recently traded Zaire Franklin. Coming off a career-best 117 total tackles in the desert, Davis-Gaither arrives in Indy as the team retools a roster that looked like a Super Bowl contender before disaster struck last winter.
The move to bring in Davis-Gaither isn’t just about filling a roster spot; it’s about familiarity. He reunites with Colts defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo, his former coach during his early years in Cincinnati. Davis-Gaither put on a clinic for the Cardinals last season, starting 13 games and proving he can handle a heavy snap count. His arrival follows the signing of veteran safety Jonathan Owens, who joins the secondary after a physical two-year stint with the Chicago Bears.
The Colts are moving fast to patch holes after sending Franklin to Green Bay for defensive lineman Colby Wooden. It’s a high-stakes gamble for a front office that usually prefers to build through the draft, but the 2026 season feels like a “now or never” window for this group. The defense struggled late last year, and Ballard is clearly prioritizing veteran toughness over developmental projects.
“I’m here to hunt. This team was 8-2 and the talk of the league last year for a reason. Losing Zaire is tough, but I’ve got Lou’s system in my DNA. We’re going to be violent, we’re going to be fast, and we’re going to finish what was started.”

While the defense is the current focus, the mood in Indianapolis hinges entirely on the health of quarterback Daniel Jones. Before tearing his Achilles in early December, Jones was playing the best football of his life. He led the Colts to a dominant 8-2 start, looking like a bargain on his previous one-year deal. The front office doubled down this week, handing Jones a two-year, $100 million extension alongside a massive $114 million deal for breakout wide receiver Alec Pierce.
Pierce finally hit the 1,000-yard mark last season, leading the NFL in yards per catch for the second straight year. With Jones expected to be cleared for training camp, the Colts are banking on their high-octane offense regaining its early-2025 form. If the new-look defense can hold its ground, Indy is the clear favorite to reclaim the AFC South crown.
