Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson plans to work out with one of the NFL's best players.
NFL Network's Cameron Wolfe reported that the 2023 first-round pick will train with Buffalo Bills quarterback and 2024 MVP Josh Allen.
"Indianapolis Colts general manager Chris Ballard told reporters on Tuesday that the team plans to hold an "open" competition between Anthony Richardson and a player they'll acquire this offseason."
Richardson hasn't lived up to his No. 4 draft status since having come to Indianapolis. Across two seasons, Richardson has garnered 11 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. Furthermore, the 6-foot-4, 244-pound quarterback completed only 47.7% of his passes in 2024, which was the lowest among qualified players.
Richardson has missed a total of 17 games due to injury, and his lack of leadership skills have been displayed. Due to Richardson's durability concerns and on-field struggles, it should be no surprise the organization is open to a quarterback competition.
However, Wolfe notes that Richardson wasn't surprised or "bothered" by the team's desire to bring in competition, and he also plans to do "some VT training."
Richardson seems to be heading in the right direction by choosing to work out with Allen. Richardson and Allen are two quarterbacks who rely on their athletic ability to be effective on the field. Moreover, they are both similar in size, and Allen also had to work on his throwing motions early in his career.
Above all else, Allen can show Richardson what it takes to be a franchise leader. Allen is known for his toughness and will to succeed. He suffered a broken left hand in Week 1 but didn't miss any games.
Richardson, 22, has the potential to be one of the league's premier players. However, his leadership skills, lack of accuracy and hard time staying healthy are areas where improvement is needed. Luckily for Richardson, aligning himself with an MVP quarterback with ample similarities should help immensely.
