An Indianapolis Colts assistant suffered a severe injury at the very end of Thursday night’s preseason opener.

Colts special teams coordinator Brian Mason went down on the sideline after colliding with two players who spilled onto the sideline in the final play of a 13-13 tie with the New England Patriots. Mason could be seen writhing in pain on the ground after the play.

According to Joel Erickson of the Indianapolis Star, Mason suffered multiple torn knee ligaments in the incident.

While these sorts of injuries on sidelines are uncommon, they do happen. In this instance, Mason just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, and he suffered a pretty brutal injury as a result. He wasn’t even the only coach to suffer injuries during training camp this week, though his were the most severe.

Mason is starting his fourth season as the Colts’ special teams coordinator. He previously worked in the same job for Cincinnati and Notre Dame at the college level.
