Colts could sign veteran QB after trading for Matt Ryan?

Indianapolis Colts head coach Frank Reich and company are hoping they upgraded at the quarterback position this offseason by trading Carson Wentz to the Washington Commanders and then acquiring one-time Most Valuable Player Matt Ryan from the Atlanta Falcons.

It appears Indianapolis isn't out of the quarterback market quite yet.

Currently, 2021 sixth-round draft pick Sam Ehlinger is Indianapolis' QB2, and the club also has unproven commodity James Morgan and undrafted rookie Jack Coan on the roster. Per Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk, Reich recently admitted that general manager Chris Ballard could look to sign a veteran signal-caller later this spring or summer.

"We’re always looking at who makes this team better, at every position. Who are the available veterans? Who can we still sign? Chris is very methodical about that process," Reich explained. "We’re not in a rush. There is a timing to the way things go, and the way the roster is put together, that is very intentional."

One name that immediately comes to mind is Baker Mayfield of the Cleveland Browns. Mayfield has lost his job to Deshaun Watson, and it's believed a handful of teams could be waiting for the Browns to cut the 2018 first overall draft choice because he's owed $18.858 million of fully guaranteed salary for 2022 and is clearly surplus to requirements in Cleveland.

It's unclear if Indianapolis would pursue Mayfield as a free agent if he became available. Mayfield allegedly had "strong interest" in the Colts back in March before they landed Ryan.
