Eight weeks into the 2025 NFL season, it seemed like the Colts were the latest team to hit the reclamation project jackpot, joining the Buccaneers and Seahawks as teams to take advantage of a talented, highly drafted quarterback who just needed a new home to maximize their abilities.
That quarterback would be Daniel Jones, who was cut by the New York Giants less than a year ago. Fast forward to Week 8 of the 2025 season, and Jones was an instrumental piece in the Colts’ dominant 7-1 start, ranking in the top half of the league in nearly every major passing statistic.
Now, however, Jones seems to have fallen back to earth to some extent. Over the Colts’ past two games, he’s accounted for nine turnover-worthy plays, the most in the NFL through that stretch.
Jones addressed this concerning development during the Colts’ media availability on Wednesday.
“I think it’s everything working together with that stuff. And obviously a lot on me. I’ve got to do a good job protecting the ball in those situations,” Jones explained. “We’re confident. We’ve done a really good job with that all season, so we’ll continue to do that.”
Jones needs to get back to the player he was in Weeks 1-8 if the Colts want to stay on their winning trajectory. They managed a 1-1 record during Jones’s rough patch, with their lone win largely thanks to Jonathan Taylor’s dominant 244-yard, three-touchdown performance against the Falcons.
Although a win is still a win, the Colts can't afford many more blowup outings from Jones for two key reasons. First, Taylor can't be expected to produce those kinds of numbers every game, and second, they won't face the Falcons every week.
In fact, Atlanta might have been the last "easy" matchup Indianapolis has left. According to ESPN’s Football Power Index , the Colts have the toughest remaining strength of schedule in the league. This stretch begins Sunday afternoon against the Kansas City Chiefs, with the Texans, Jaguars, Seahawks, and 49ers still on the docket.
In short, there are no gimmies left on the Colts’ schedule. It’s do-or-die time in Indianapolis, and to secure home-field advantage in the playoffs, Jones needs to figure it out, and fast.
