Colts GM Chris Ballard Will Not Consider Extension

While speaking to the media, Ballard replied, “I wouldn’t do one” when asked if he would consider signing an extension prior to the start of the coming campaign. The longtime executive has been at the helm of the Colts since 2017, but it has been five years and counting since the team last reached the postseason. Ballard’s tenure includes only playoff victory to date, and lame-duck status could of course put pressure on him to act with greater urgency regarding roster moves.

“I’m always going to do the best thing for the organization,” Ballard said (video link) when offering assurances he will not alter his approach with respect to player contracts even with an uncertain job status. “Ultimately, that’s my job. Anytime you do selfish, alternative, ulterior motive in play — that’s not good for the game, it’s not good for the organization. We will always do what’s best for this club.”

Through much of his tenure, Ballard leaned heavily on retaining homegrown players instead of aggressively pursuing outside additions. That approach saw a number of notable exceptions recently, however, with moves such as the Daniel Jones signing and the Sauce Gardner trade illustrating a willingness to sacrifice long-term flexibility in the name of short-term upgrades. Ballard retained Jones on a two-year deal this offseason, one in which Michael Pittman Jr. was traded away to help make a major raise for fellow wideout Alec Pierce viable.

Jones and Pierce will be joined for at least the 2026 campaign by running back Jonathan Taylor and left guard Quenton Nelson. Both Taylor and Nelson are pending 2027 free agents as things stand, although extension talks with the former have occurred. The fact that Ballard is uncertain to remain in place for next year creates an interesting dynamic as it pertains to negotiations with Taylor and other key Colts.

Ballard – who currently sits ninth on the list of the NFL’s longest-tenured GMs – signed an extension in 2021. That pact was finalized during Jim Irsay‘s ownership spell, but his passing left Carlie Irsay-Gordon in charge. Irsay-Gordon has noted the need for urgency on the part of Ballard and head coach Shane Steichen in their second season working alongside her, so plenty will be riding on Indianapolis’ ability to rebound from last year’s second-half collapse.
