Colts got a closer look at a former NFL All Pro and Super Bowl champion free agent ahead of Week 7

Teams often hold workouts with free agents throughout the season. They could do this for multiple reasons, such as injuries piling up in a specific position or just needing to mix things up on their practice squad. The Indianapolis Colts held a very specific workout this week after they saw a key player go down with an injury.

Samson Ebukam seems to have avoided a serious injury in Week 7, but it has been reported that he will miss some time. As a result, they held a workout with six players: three edge rushers and three linebackers who also have experience rushing the passer. The most notable name on this list is, without a doubt, former Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ Shaquil Barrett.

The Colts worked out former Buccaneers pass rusher Shaq Barrett

Nov 5, 2023; Houston, Texas, USA; Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud (7) attempts a pass as Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker Shaquil Barrett (7) applies defensive pressure during the first quarter at NRG Stadium.

Barrett began his career with the Denver Broncos in 2015 and spent four years with the franchise. He appeared in 61 games and started 15 before signing with the Buccaneers in 2019. He spent the remaining six years of his career with the Buccaneers and had his most successful season in 2019, when he set his career high for sacks with 19.5. He retired after the 2024 season but is looking to make a comeback.

The Colts' pass rush has had an up-and-down season. They've generated pressure but have struggled to get home for sacks. Oddly, Barrett isn't the solution for the Colts, but I give them credit for trying every free agency option.

After the workout, the Colts signed an edge, but it wasn't Barrett; it was undrafted rookie Seth Coleman. Does this mean the ship has sailed for Barrett and the Colts? Or does it point to the team trying to sign him later? We will have to wait and see.
