NFL Hall of Famer Dwight Freeney is widely considered to be one of the best pass rushers to ever play the game.

The former Indianapolis Colts draft pick came into the league as a wrecking ball, racking up double digit sacks in seven of his first nine seasons with the team.

Eventually age and attrition set in, but not before Freeney could record over 100 sacks with the Colts.

He ended up bouncing around quite a bit at the end of his career, but to this day he remains a prominent figure in Indianapolis.

The seven-time Pro Bowler has shied away from the public eye for the most part since his retirement after the 2017 season, but that just changed in a big way.

The Syracuse Orange announced that Freeney will join the organization as the leader of player development.

There is no public record of the Hall of Famer being involved in a football organization before, so this will be an incredible new challenge for him.

But Freeney attended the University from 1998-2001, so they will most likely provide him with every resource imaginable to be successful.

It may be a new challenge, but there is no precedent saying he won’t succeed because this is a growing trend in sports for alumni to hold important positions.

Recently, Golden State Warriors superstar Stephen Curry was named the Assistant General Manager of Davidson University’s basketball team.

However, this is a much different set of circumstances seeing as Curry is still an active player, so it’s possible that he is just a figurehead who Davidson hopes will help with recruiting.

Freeney has nothing but time on his hands so it will likely be a much more rigorous process for him.

The Colts legend was an absolute force on the field who struck fear into the hearts of offensive lineman.

If he can bring that same passion and commitment to Syracuse, then their program will be in for a treat.
