Carson Wentz may need surgery on injured foot

The Indianapolis Colts’ hopes for a successful 2021 season took a huge hit when quarterback Carson Wentz went down with a foot injury that could involve a bone and ligament.

NFL Network’s Mike Silver reported the latest buzz on Wentz’s injury and how the QB may need surgery:

Wentz was hoping a reunion with his former Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator and Colts head coach Frank Reich would help him revive his career after a disastrous 2020 campaign in Philly. Unfortunately, Wentz may not even get the chance to prove himself this year.

Injuries have plagued Wentz throughout his career. He missed the Eagles’ run to win Super Bowl LII due to a torn ACL, and a back injury kept him out of the next postseason. The 28-year-old suffered a concussion in his playoff debut following the 2019 campaign, too.

Indianapolis Colts’ outlook without Carson Wentz in 2021 is ominous

It was already going to be an uphill battle for the Colts to compete with the likes of the reigning AFC South champion Tennessee Titans after they added superstar wide receiver Julio Jones to an already-potent offense. Now, they’re in jeopardy of rivaling the Houston Texans for the worst QB situation in their division.

Second-year signal-caller Jacob Eason has the arm strength and stature to be an NFL starter. However, there’s a reason he transferred from Georgia to Washington in college — and a reason why he wasn’t drafted until the fourth round in 2020 — namely lackluster accuracy.

Other than Eason, the only other QB Indy could turn to is rookie sixth-round pick Sam Ehlinger. That’s not a recipe for success, either.

Even with Wentz, this Colts team wasn’t guaranteed to contend for the playoffs. It was a leap of faith to say he’d bounce back without much adversity from the awful end to his time with the Eagles.

Colts general manager Chris Ballard is widely considered one of the best in the business. He already traded for Wentz this offseason. Will he stay the course with him, or try to find another star to fill the most important position in 2021 — and potentially beyond?

Until Wentz’s status becomes clearer, Indianapolis anxiously awaits. Right now, it’s not looking good, so Ballard should at least start looking into a trade for a viable replacement such as Gardner Minshew, Nick Foles or someone else.
