Colts QB Philip Rivers will coach high school football after retirement

Philip Rivers isn't retired just yet, but the Indianapolis Colts quarterback already has a post-NFL job lined up.

The eight-time Pro Bowler will become head coach of the St. Michael Catholic High School football team in Fairhope, Ala., upon his retirement from the NFL, the team announced Friday, according to ESPN's Mike Wells.

"It's a special day for me and my family really," Rivers said, according to AL.com. "I will probably get a little emotional. I had two childhood dreams. One was to play in the NFL, and I'm now going into my 17th season. The other was to be a high school football coach as my dad was. How blessed am I to be able to live both of those out!"

Rivers was an all-state quarterback for his father Steve Rivers at Athens High School in Alabama before playing at N.C. State and moving on to the NFL.

It's unknown when Rivers will officially call it quits as the 38-year-old QB takes things one year at a time. The Colts certainly hope he'll stick around a bit longer than the one year they signed him for.

Rivers spent 16 seasons with the Chargers and went 123-101 with 59,271 yards, 397 touchdowns and a 64.7 completion percentage.

Last season, though, he wasn't as good. The Chargers went 5-11 with Rivers throwing for 4,615 yards, 23 touchdowns and 20 interceptions. The Colts hope they can rejuvenate the veteran quarterback, but he still may be average in 2020.

How he performs in 2020 will probably play a large role in playing another year or retiring and heading to Alabama to coach.
