Adonai Mitchell’s rookie season had its fair share of growing pains, but the Indianapolis Colts wideout is entering his sophomore campaign with a new level of comfort that he believes will make all the difference.
"Last year, it just felt like I was ripping and running from the start of camp to the end of the year," Mitchell said Saturday, via the team's website. "But I got the ability to get my first offseason under my belt, got a lot of time to, first of all, relax and work at the same time. And now, we in year two now, and I just feel more comfortable, whether it's in the meeting rooms, walkthroughs. I'm not focused on what the play is, what do I have to do? I'm focused on how I'm doing it, and why I'm doing what I'm doing."
For Mitchell, continuity around him has played a key role in his growth. With head coach Shane Steichen and offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter returning for another year, along with several experienced wideouts beside him, Mitchell has a solid foundation to build on. He will no longer feel overwhelmed with the complexity of the plays; instead, he can focus on mastering all the small details.
In 2024, Mitchell appeared in all 17 games, starting in seven, where he racked up 23 receptions for 312 yards. Despite not the greatest numbers, Mitchell entered the offseason still feeling very confident in his abilities.
“I knew it would eventually come together,” Mitchell said. “I know my hands work, I know my routes work. It was all just a matter of time.”
Mitchell's confidence and comfort in the system seem to be paying off, as according to Jim Bob Cooter, Mitchell has made some noticeable strides this offseason.
“He’s done a really nice job making plays,” Cooter said. “AD’s number has been called a few times, and the quarterback has looked his way a few extra times, and he’s taken advantage of those things.”
With the team in a quarterback battle between Anthony Richardson and Daniel Jones, improved play from the wide receivers will be key. Mitchell, who has good speed, route nuance and size, could be catching up to other talented receivers on the team. With more reps and chemistry between Mitchell and whoever may start, the best may still be to come for the young wideout.
