So far this season, Jonathan Taylor has looked like an outright superstar. Will the Indianapolis Colts running back have an MVP-caliber year?
Taylor was amazing in the Week 2 win over the Denver Broncos. He rushed for 165 yards and caught two passes for 50 yards and a touchdown. As a result, he was named the AFC Offensive Player of the Week. This is the fourth time Taylor has won AFC Player of the Week honors in his career. He previously won it in Week 16 of last season when he rushed for 218 yards and three touchdowns against the Tennessee Titans.
The 2025 season is young. But it’s certainly a possibility that Taylor can have a big-time year.
Jonathan Taylor played college football at Wisconsin. During his three years with the Badgers, he won Big Ten Freshman of the Year and was a two-time Unanimous All-American. He was also a two-time recipient of the Doak Walker Award, which honors the top running back in college football. Taylor left Wisconsin at fourth on the all-time FBS rushing yards list with 6,174.
The Colts drafted Taylor in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft. He would turn out to be one of the best draft picks in franchise history. Taylor had an immediate impact in Indy, rushing for 1,169 yards and 11 touchdowns as a rookie.
Taylor was dominant during the 2021 season. He led the league in rushing yards (1,811) and rushing touchdowns (18). For his efforts, he earned First-Team All-Pro honors and was runner-up for Offensive Player of the Year (lost to Cooper Kupp).
Due to injury, Taylor failed to reach 900 yards in each of the following two seasons. However, he bounced back last year, rushing for 1,431 yards and 11 touchdowns. Taylor was also named to the Pro Bowl for the second time in his career. He was one of the few bright spots for the Colts, who finished with an 8-9 record and missed the playoffs for the fourth consecutive year.
Taylor is off to a phenomenal start this year. His 236 rushing yards led the NFL through two games.
When healthy, Jonathan Taylor is easily one of the league’s best running backs. Unfortunately, he has struggled with injuries over the past few years. He hasn’t played more than 12 games in any of the past three seasons.
2021 was the best season of Taylor’s career. He was truly a dynamic player back then. He can return to his 2021 form this year if he can stay healthy.
Off to a 2-0 start, the Colts are one of the league’s most surprising teams this year. Quarterback Daniel Jones is the main reason for their success. The former New York Giant has revived his career and is perhaps this year’s version of Sam Darnold.
But Taylor’s play can’t be overlooked. Again, if he can avoid the injury bug and Indy’s offensive line continues to block well for him, the two-time Pro-Bowler could be in store for a monster season.
