There are very few NFL players that are having a worse six months than Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson.
He got benched for Joe Flacco in the middle of the season, got the job back, missed the last two games of the year due to injury, and now is being thrust into a heated quarterback competition.
The third-year signal caller has been under fire from football fans across the nation, and the Colts organization’s frequent statements to the media about the necessity of Richardson’s improved have only amplified the pressure he’s facing.
Amongst all the chaos, Indianapolis general manager Chris Ballard offered some of the first inspiring words the former Florida quarterback has heard in ages.
Ballard recently appeared on the “Up and Adams” sports talk show and was grilled on the subject of the quarterback competition.
When discussing Richardson, the Colts general manager explained that the team still has faith in him, saying “With Anthony, knowing how young he was, and the lack of experience, and what he’s gained so far, and what he’s going to gain going forward, we think there’s major upside. When that happens, I’m not ‘Nostradamus’ in that way, but we think it’ll happen eventually.”
It’s clear that the former 4th overall pick has lost some standing with the organization, but it should be a nice vote of confidence for him to hear that the belief is still there.
After all, Richardson is not even 23-years-old yet, and entering his third season, if he retains the starting job, he’ll still be the youngest starter in the NFL.
He has only started a few dozen games and thrown a few hundred passes since the beginning of his high school career, so Indianapolis knew it wouldn’t be an overnight development process when they selected him.
But the young gunslinger will need to improve drastically this upcoming season if he wants to remain with the Colts.
Daniel Jones was signed by the team a few weeks back to battle Richardson for the starting job.
The organization is likely hoping that he doesn’t beat out the incumbent for the job, but if push comes to shove, they’re ready to put their young leader back on the bench for the sake of offensive competency.
