Will Jonathan Taylor earn NFL Offensive Player of the Year honors? The superstar running back is having a great season with the Indianapolis Colts. Taylor’s 1,282 yards on the ground are a league-best, as are his 15 touchdowns.
The 8-4 Colts have lost three of their last four games. Yet, they’re still one of the NFL’s most surprising teams this year thanks to Taylor.
It has been an up-and-down season for the Colts. Earlier in the year, it looked like they were a lock to win the AFC South. But now, there’s a possibility that they won’t even make the playoffs. The 8-4 Jacksonville Jaguars and the 7-4 Houston Texans have emerged as tough competitors in the division.
The Colts could win the AFC South for the first time since 2014. But for that to happen, they’ll need Jonathan Taylor to bring his “A Game” for the rest of the season.
Jonathan Taylor is one of the top candidates for Offensive Player of the Year. But don’t forget about Jaxon Smith-Njiba. The Seattle Seahawks wide receiver leads the NFL in receiving yards with 1,336.
Smith-Njiba has also reached the 100-yard mark eight times this season. He recorded 167 yards in a Week 12 win over the Tennessee Titans.
Running back Christian McCaffrey is another Offensive Player of the Year candidate. He’s no stranger to the award. The San Francisco 49ers star won it in 2023. This season, McCaffrey has 237 carries (first), 849 rushing yards and 806 receiving yards for the 9-4 49ers.
Fellow running back Jahmyr Gibbs has been a force for the Detroit Lions. This year, he has rushed for 1,019 yards (fourth) and 10 touchdowns (tied for third). In Week 12, he rushed for 21a 9 yards and two touchdowns on the ground, along with 45 receiving yards and one receiving touchdown in Detroit’s win over the New York Giants.
Drake Maye is also a candidate. The New England Patriots quarterback is having a breakout year. The second-year star leads the league with 3,412 passing yards and is fourth in touchdowns (23). More importantly, he has led New England to a 11-2 record, which is the best in the league.
A quarterback hasn’t won Offensive Player of the Year since 2018. That was when the Kansas City Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes received the honors. While Maye could end the streak and win it this season, look for him to win MVP instead.
Jonathan Taylor has had several memorable performances in 2025. He was amazing in Week 10, rushing for 244 yards and three touchdowns in a win over the Atlanta Falcons. He also caught three passes for 42 yards in that contest.
Earlier this season, Taylor was the frontrunner to win MVP. But his MVP chances were ruined after his 45-yard performance against the Pittsburgh Steelers and being held to 58 yards against the Chiefs.
A non-quarterback hasn’t won MVP since 2012 (running back Adrian Peterson). With that said, it’s unlikely that Taylor would’ve won the award even if he didn’t have those forgettable games. For some reason, the MVP award has become a “quarterback only” trophy over the years.
Look for Jonathan Taylor to win Offensive Player of the Year as he plays outstanding football the rest of the season.
