Colts to honor late Jim Irsay with heartfelt jersey tribute

The post quickly gained traction, earning praise from fans, media members, and former players who reflected on Irsay’s lasting impact on both the franchise and the NFL.

Irsay made history in 1984 as the youngest general manager in the NFL, later becoming the Colts’ owner in 1997. During his tenure, the team reached the playoffs 16 times, secured two AFC titles, and won the Super Bowl in 2007. Beyond his role as an executive, Irsay played a key part in shaping the Colts into one of the NFL’s most respected franchises.

Prior to Irsay’s leadership, Indiana was largely defined by its basketball tradition and devotion to the Indy 500. But once he stepped in, the Colts inspired a new wave of football pride across the state. Just six years after taking the reins, Irsay hired Hall of Famers Bill Polian and Tony Dungy and drafted Peyton Manning, kickstarting a decade-long powerhouse run. His connection to the team’s greats was personal—he delivered the Hall of Fame induction speeches for Marvin Harrison, Edgerrin James, and Dwight Freeney himself.
