Colts were concerned about Jimmy Garoppolo's shoulder surgery?
San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports

The Indianapolis Colts moved quickly to acquire Matt Ryan after the Atlanta Falcons missed out on Deshaun Watson. Some viewed them as a fit for Jimmy Garoppolo prior to that, but the Colts never explored that option. That may have had something to do with Jimmy G.’s health.

Garoppolo recently underwent shoulder surgery. According to ESPN’s Dianna Russini, the Colts were concerned about the potential of Garoppolo missing too much work this offseason.

That doesn’t necessarily mean the Colts would have preferred a healthy Garoppolo over Ryan. However, it is noteworthy because their concerns might be shared by other teams.

Garoppolo’s options have dried up over the past week or so. The Falcons quickly signed Marcus Mariota after they traded Ryan. The New Orleans Saints, who also missed out on the Watson sweepstakes, re-signed Jameis Winston on Monday. Other than the Seattle Seahawks, there really aren’t any teams that have an obvious need for a starting quarterback.

Even though Garoppolo led the San Francisco 49ers to the NFC Championship Game last season, they are still ready to turn things over to Trey Lance. Garoppolo obviously wants to start elsewhere, but he may be competing with one other veteran for the last remaining job or two.
