Colts WR T.Y. Hilton questionable to play vs. 49ers

Indianapolis Colts veteran wide receiver T.Y. Hilton has run into some brutal misfortune since the closing weeks of summer.

The four-time Pro Bowl selection missed the start of the season because he required a surgical procedure on his neck, and Hilton admitted last week that he strongly considered retiring but ultimately returned from injured reserve for this past Sunday's 31-3 win over the Houston Texans. Hilton caught four passes for 80 yards but hurt his quad in that victory, and Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk notes Hilton didn't practice Wednesday ahead of this Sunday's matchup against the San Francisco 49ers.

"We need time and need a couple of days to see how it plays out and how T.Y. responds," Colts coach Frank Reich told reporters, per CBS Sports/RotoWire. "I just don't want to over-commit either way."

Considering Hilton's reaction to his previous setback, nobody could blame Reich for sitting the 31-year-old through the remainder of the midweek en route to making him a game-time decision.

As for the Niners, coach Kyle Shanahan said veteran quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is more likely to start ahead of rookie Trey Lance. Garoppolo is making positive strides recovering from a calf contusion, while Lance may miss another week of work because of a knee sprain.
