Players who didn't quite make the 53-man roster had one more shot to stick around the Washington Commanders. That, of course, was coming back onto the practice squad if they cleared waivers.
There was a good chance general manager Adam Peters could get everyone he wanted to return if the opportunity arose. This is an exciting project to be part of, and the Commanders' squad built some strong brotherhoods throughout the summer.
Being released or waived is never easy. However, getting a chance to keep your foot in the door is a decent consolation prize in difficult circumstances at this time of year.
Peters and head coach Dan Quinn couldn't bring everybody back. But they were suitably impressed with the work ethic displayed throughout offseason workouts and training camp to maintain some semblance of continuity, for now at least.
The Commanders confirmed 14 players to their practice squad. T.J. Maguranyanga is an international pathway player, so he won't count against the 17. This means four spots are open, so there are still moves for Peters to make before preparations for Week 1 against the New York Giants begin.
Here is the current list, with the promise of more to come.
The Commanders aren't ready to give up on quarterback Sam Hartman, which is surprising. The same could be said of veterans like offensive lineman Michael Deiter, wide receiver Chris Moore, and defensive tackle Sheldon Day, who haven't shown much since joining Washington last season.
Fans were thrilled to see wide receiver Ja'Corey Brooks, cornerback Car'lin Vigers, and defensive back Rob McDaniel continue their development with the squad. The undrafted trio flashed tremendous promise, so there's a chance for them to get activated on game days and potentially to the active roster permanently if the necessary polish arrives in the coming months.
Aside from that, there weren't many surprises. But make no mistake, every practice squad player must stay ready, because there is just no telling when their number might be called.
