ASHBURN, VA — The Washington Commanders hold the No. 7 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, and the pressure is on. After a whirlwind free agency where GM Adam Peters aggressivey retooled the defense, Washington faces a massive gap between their first selection and their next pick in the third round. To keep the momentum of the Jayden Daniels era moving, this first-round pick must be a home run.
The 2026 mock draft circuit is buzzing with names like Rueben Bain Jr. and David Bailey. While the Commanders added veteran pass rushers earlier this month, the consensus remains: Washington needs a young, terrifying presence off the edge. The draft kicks off April 23 at Acrisure Stadium, and the decision at No. 7 will define the next chapter of Dan Quinn’s defense.
Most major analysts, including Daniel Jeremiah and Max Chadwick, see Miami’s Rueben Bain Jr. as the favorite for Washington. Despite concerns about his 30 7/8-inch arms, Bain’s production is undeniable. He led the nation with 83 pressures last season and posted a massive 92.8 PFF grade. He isn’t just a pass rusher; he’s a wrecking ball who can slide inside on sub-packages.
If Bain is gone, Texas Tech speedster David Bailey is the clear pivot. Bailey set the 2026 Combine on fire with a 4.51-second 40-yard dash, the fastest among all defensive linemen. He finished 2025 as the national leader in sacks. Pairing Bailey’s pure speed with newly signed Odafe Oweh would give opposing NFC East tackles nightmares. The Commanders’ defense finished in the bottom six in PFF grading for three straight years—Bailey or Bain would change that overnight.
“Washington still needs some receiving outside of Terry McLaurin, but general manager Adam Peters did a great job reshaping his defense in a hurry. Adding a blue-chip pass rusher at seven makes this a scary group.”

If the Commanders decide to look past the defensive line, two Ohio State stars—Caleb Downs and Sonny Styles—are high on the list. Styles is a physical freak who recorded a 43.5-inch vertical jump at the combine. With Bobby Wagner expected to depart in free agency, Styles provides a younger, more explosive leader for the middle of the field. Meanwhile, ESPN’s Field Yates suggests a “dream pick” in Notre Dame RB Jeremiyah Love. Love’s 4.36 speed would turn the Commanders’ backfield into a track meet alongside Jayden Daniels.
Since Washington doesn’t pick again until the third round, they must find value for the offense later. Georgia’s Zachariah Branch is the name to watch. Though undersized, Branch is arguably the most dangerous returner and slot threat in the class. Other options include Clemson’s Antonio Williams and the massive Ted Hurst from Georgia State. Hurst stands nearly 6-foot-4 and would provide the “big-bodied” target the Commanders have lacked to complement McLaurin’s deep-threat ability.
