Commanders' Adam Peters keeps cutting checks (just not the one that matters)

Terry McLaurin is still holding out in his quest to get a lucrative new contract extension from the Washington Commanders. Although it's a tense situation, it hasn't stopped general manager Adam Peters from turning his attention to other matters.

McLaurin is currently on the reserve/did not report list. He's in the area, ready to rejoin his teammates when his representatives and the Commanders reach some common ground on a new deal. That could be some way off yet, but both sides are at least working towards the same goal.

Peters is all about putting the team first. It's why he's reluctant to meet McLaurin's asking price right now. It's also why this predicament isn't stopping him from getting other agreements worked out this summer.

Commanders extend Percy Butler as negotiations with Terry McLaurin continue

All-Pro special teamer Jeremy Reaves was the first to get an extension ahead of time. One of his teammates in the safety room was the latest, with Percy Butler also getting another one-year commitment from the organization.

Butler's always flattered to deceive when given opportunities on the defensive rotation. However, the former fourth-round pick has carved out a decent niche for himself as a special-teams gunner, which is a role Washington will deploy the defensive back once again this time around.

Dan Quinn lauded Butler for the improvements made away from the team. He's growing in stature, so having some extra financial security represents another confidence boost for the Louisiana product entering his fourth NFL season.

Obviously, the one-year deals that Reaves and Butler received are far less complicated than McLaurin's extension. This is his third NFL contract, and he'll be 30 years old in September. While the second-team All-Pro has shown no signs of slowing down just yet, Peters is taking the cautious approach. That's left the wide receiver feeling disrespected and undervalued, and frustrations are building across the franchise.

McLaurin won't begrudge Butler or any other teammate their money. The Commanders have a tight-knit group that all pull for each other. However, this latest development will only add to his disappointment about being made to feel second best.

The Commanders want to extend McLaurin, but only at a deal that works for everyone. The former third-round pick out of Ohio State wants more than $30 million per year as the wide receiver market soars around the NFL. Drastic measures have been taken, and nobody has budged as yet. And the longer this drags on, the more detrimental it's going to be.

Butler's been paid. McLaurin must be next.
