Training camp only began a few short days ago for the Washington Commanders. However, that hasn't stopped one rookie from pulling clear in his quest for a starting job.
And make no mistake, this represents the best-case scenario for the Commanders as they look for defensive improvements this season.
Big things are expected of Washington's secondary in 2025. Everyone is healthy, and problem positions have been strengthened. There are some slight concerns about the pass rush, but the additions of Javon Kinlaw and Von Miller should upgrade a unit that was devoid of explosiveness or consistency last time around.
Expectations are much higher for the cornerback unit. This might be an area of real strength if everyone stays healthy. And the addition of second-round pick Trey Amos could be a legitimate X-factor based on early impressions.
Amos caught the eye constantly throughout Washington's offseason program. He hasn't taken his foot off the gas at training camp, leading Zach Selby from the team's website to suggest the starting boundary spot opposite Marshon Lattimore is the Ole Miss product's to lose right now.
[Trey] Amos, the team's second-round pick in this year's draft, has spent most of his time with the starting defense and locked down several of the team's receivers. He had an impressive pass breakup against Luke McCaffrey at the goal line on Thursday and grabbed an interception off [Jayden] Daniels, although the play was ruled dead because of a flag on the defense. The Commanders had a first-round grade on Amos in the draft process, and it is easy to see why. There's still a long way to go before the season opener, but as long as Amos keeps this up, it's his job to lose.Zach Selby
The Commanders aren't in the business of handing out spots to their incoming rookies. Head coach Dan Quinn and his outstanding staff make them earn everything, which is bringing a positive response from Amos and others during their crucial transition from college to the pros.
Amos is rising to the occasion. The defensive back came into the franchise with a huge chip on his shoulder after dropping to No. 61 overall in the 2025 NFL Draft. A back issue during his medical assessments was the reason, but the Commanders don't believe it will jeopardize his chances of a productive career in Washington.
It's so far, so good on that front. And if Amos continues this exceptional start, he'll be in the starting lineup when Week 1 against the New York Giants rolls around.
