The Commanders have arranged a veteran addition in the secondary. Cornerback Rasul Douglas plans to sign with Washington, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports.
Per Schefter, Douglas’ deal will be for one year. It will carry a maximum value of $3.8MM. Washington’s cornerback room will receive a boost once this agreement is officially in place. Douglas is a nine-year veteran who has spent much of his career as a full-time starter. Team and player were in contact for a time prior to today’s news, Schefter’s colleague John Keim adds.
Douglas endured a lengthy stay on the open market last year following his first full season with the Bills. A one-year Dolphins contract was worked out in the wake of Miami being ravaged by injuries at the cornerback position. Douglas operated as a full-time starter in 2025, collecting two interceptions and 13 pass breakups along the way.
In spite of that production, the Dolphins did not pursue a new Douglas deal this spring. The former third-rounder remained unsigned through the opening stages of free agency and well after the draft, but he has now managed to line up a deal prior to training camp. Douglas can be expected to take part in padded practices this summer with Washington, a team seeking needed improvements on defense in 2026.
Marshon Lattimore‘s tenure in the nation’s capital did not go according to plan. It came as no surprise when he was released in March, but that created the need for additional experience and depth at the CB spot. Returnees Mike Sainristil and Trey Amos will be joined by offseason additions Amik Robertson and Ahkello Witherspoon this season. Douglas, who will turn 31 in August, will add another veteran presence to that group.
In 135 games, Douglas has totaled 93 starts. Over that span, he has totaled 21 interceptions and 92 pass deflections while seeing his coverage statistics vary from one year to the next. 2025 saw Douglas post a strong showing as the nearest defender. Managing to repeat that feat with the Commanders would help the team rebound from a poor showing on defense in particular last season. Washington entered Monday with over $43MM in cap space, so this addition will not prevent further summer roster moves from taking place.
