Commanders' Chase Young to miss at least four games on PUP list

The Washington Commanders will be without star pass rusher Chase Young for at least four games to start the 2022 season after placing him on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list Tuesday.

Young, 23, is working to come back from an ACL tear suffered in November 2021. He began training camp on the PUP list and ESPN reported at the time that Young wasn't expected to be back in action with the team until at least mid-September. With the roster move Tuesday, the earliest Young can return is on Oct. 9 for a Week 5 game against the Tennessee Titans.

In 2019, Young broke out as a college football star at Ohio State, finishing the year with 16.5 sacks, 21 tackles for loss, unanimous All-American honors and both the Bronco Nagurski Award and Chuck Bednarik Award, each recognizing the nation's best defensive player. Washington then picked Young with the second overall selection in the 2020 NFL Draft.

Young earned Pro Bowl and Defensive Rookie of the Year honors after finishing his first NFL season with 7.5 sacks. But he struggled to produce in year two with just 1.5 sacks before suffering his season-ending knee injury in Week 10.

The Commanders defensive line also features Montez Sweat, Daron Payne and Jonathan Allen. With Young out of action, the team has German-born David Bada, Nigerian-born Efe Obada, and 2020 seventh-round pick Casey Toohill among its options at defensive end.
